Technical Project Manager (TPM) Fellow

Many different organizations and countries have built solutions on top of the OpenMRS platform, making it very important to provide clear cross-community coordination while working with a worldwide network of members.

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Technical Project Manager Fellow. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams across time zones to track deliverables, organize meetings and events, and unblock the Global Support Team in a variety of project forums. 

The OpenMRS Fellowship Program aims to expand our community’s capacity by providing practical opportunities to develop advanced skill sets with the support and guidance of mentors and other technical experts. TPM Fellows are early-to-mid-level project managers. They can handle moderate issues and ideally have experience with OpenMRS.

Role Overview

  • TPM Role: 

    • Develop project management work plans and roadmaps for assigned projects and activities in community tooling, such as JIRA, Google docs, etc.

    • Effectively communicate with community members openly and transparently using community communication tools and forums.

    • Organize and schedule support sessions with stakeholders from multiple countries and timezones. 

    • Track key project milestones of community Squads, closely monitor dependencies, and follow up on delays promptly. 

    • Support Squad Leaders with cross-community coordination and communication where needed.

    • Identify different problems and propose thoughtful solutions for those problems in a team setting.

    • Promptly communicate project-related risks and challenges to Mentor. Escalate functional, quality and timeline issues appropriately.

    • Help train community members in effective ticket documentation, such as bug reproducibility.

Requirements

  • 1+ years experience working in a project management role, project coordination role, and/or working as part of a software development teams.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with team members and with guests.

  • Organized with both tasks and time management.

  • Highly communicative, proactive, and self-driven, with strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Works well with people of different cultures and timezones.

  • Able to work independently and as a part of a team with people of different cultures and timezones.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Experience with common Project Management processes, tools, and technologies, such as those used by the OpenMRS community: issue tracking (Jira), wiki (Confluence), communications (forums and Slack), and GSuite (Google Docs, Sheets).

  • Access to high-speed internet for team and community real-time calls (e.g. via Zoom, Slack Huddle, etc).

  • Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal.

Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Experience working with electronic medical records or other health information systems used at the clinic or point of service level, such as OpenMRS, is highly desirable.

  • Experience working in HIV care & treatment programs, HIV surveillance, HIV program management, or HIV research.  

  • Experience with healthcare and/or LMIC settings (e.g. awareness of resource requirements, on-prem deployment practices). Experience outside of the humanitarian or healthcare industry is also highly desirable (fresh ideas).

  • Familiarity with how open source projects are developed. Ideally past experience contributing to major open source projects.

  • Self-driven work ethic & problem-solver. Self-starter who loves taking initiative and seeing things through to completion. 

  • Experience in an international environment is a plus. 

Travel Expectations

This role is not expected to travel internationally, but may have opportunities to travel up to 5% of the time with expenses funded/reimbursed by OpenMRS Inc., and supported by the OpenMRS Inc. Operations team.

Compensation

Stipends offered to Fellows are based on the OpenMRS fellowship stipend scale. OpenMRS Stipend amounts are based on the GSOC Stipend Scale for comparison; in the spirit of in-country purchasing-power, we reserve the right to make exceptions based on Fellow location.
