Releases

The OpenMRS community works together to release two specific products regularly:

  • The OpenMRS EMR (2-5 releases per year): Also known as the RefApp (Reference Application), this is the frontend with a full User Interface. In recent years the community decided to make the EMR increasingly an “out-of-the-box” product; whereas, in the past, this was meant more as a reference or example.

  • The OpenMRS Platform (1-2 releases per year): This is the backend of OpenMRS, providing the engine on which OpenMRS runs. Versioning of the OpenMRS Platform was separated from the reference application in order to allow these to grow independently. In some circumstances, people may be interested in using the platform alone, independently of the reference application; these releases are also provided for them.

Historical information about OpenMRS releases pre-2020

  • Platform Prereleases: https://openmrs.atlassian.net/wiki/x/8xyRAQ

  • Nightly Releases: These are available on SourceForge here. These war files are built every night automatically off of the code in our openmrs-core git repository. If the database schema has changed, you may need to apply changes to your database. (Note: The files are only built if there was a commit to the repository within the past 24 hours).

  • Unsupported Releases - End of Life (EOL): OpenMRS can only support up to three released versions at a time (the current release and then two versions back). Learn more athttps://openmrs.atlassian.net/wiki/x/Qn_RAQ

  • Why were the RefApp and Platform Releases separated? In May 2014, with the initial releases of OpenMRS Platform 1.10, versioning of the OpenMRS Platform was separated from the reference application in order to allow these to grow independently.  The OpenMRS Platform provides the engine on which OpenMRS runs.  In some circumstances, people may be interested in using the platform alone, independently of the reference application; these releases are provided for them.
