Technical Project Manager Job Description

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Technical Project Manager to assist an OpenMRS Implementing Organization. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams across time zones to track deliverables, organize a sequence of technical requirements gathering action, and ensure timely project milestone completion.

Role Overview

  • Review previous documentation and engage with stakeholders to rapidly develop a full understanding of the business requirements, project stakes, constraints, interdependencies. 

  • Track key project milestones, closely monitor dependencies, and follow up on delays promptly. 

  • Support an in-country organization with requirements gathering, configuration needs unique to their country, feedback review, and workflow review. 

  • Coordinate communication with all areas and stakeholders of the organization impacted by the project. Actively participate in regular project consortium meetings and partner calls. Organize support sessions with stakeholders from multiple countries. 

  • Manage expectations of multi-organizational stakeholders in a professional and friendly manner.

  • Identify different problems and propose thoughtful solutions for those problems in a team setting.

  • Deliver professional project documentation and formal reporting. Report out on achievements, lessons learned, and recommendations for next steps. 

  • Promptly communicate project-related risks and challenges to OpenMRS executives. Escalate functional, quality and timeline issues appropriately.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience working in a project management role, project or team lead role, and/or working as part of a software development teams.

  • Experience with common Project Management processes, tools, and technologies, such as those used by the OpenMRS community: issue tracking (Jira), wiki (Confluence), communications (forums and Slack), and GSuite (Google Docs, Sheets).

  • Experience with gathering requirements, documenting specifications, and workflow diagrams, with demonstrated ability to support the translation of requirements into developer tasks, specifications, or similar methods.

  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines effectively. Past experience demonstrates time management skills and the ability to work across multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.

  • Able to work both independently and as a part of a team in order to identify and validate priorities for the project, develop workplans and timelines, communicate effectively to stakeholders, assign and track work for developers on the project, and effectively identify blockers and solutions to keep the work on track.

  • Demonstrable strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Flexibility to accommodate working with collaborators in various international time zones

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with team members and with guests on team calls.  Highly communicative and proactive, self-driven.  We’re a distributed team, so frequent and clear written communication is a must. 

  • Access to high-speed internet for team and community real-time calls (e.g. via Zoom, Slack Huddle, etc).

  • Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal.

Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Experience working with electronic medical records or other health information systems used at the clinic or point of service level, such as OpenMRS, is highly desirable.

  • Experience working in HIV care & treatment programs, HIV surveillance, HIV program management, or HIV research.  

  • Experience with healthcare and/or LMIC settings (e.g. awareness of resource requirements, on-prem deployment practices). Experience outside of the humanitarian or healthcare industry is also highly desirable (fresh ideas).

  • Familiarity with how open source projects are developed. Ideally past experience contributing to major open source projects.

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Project Management, Business, Public Health, or any related field.

  • Self-driven work ethic & problem-solver. Self-starter who loves taking initiative and seeing things through to completion. 

  • Experience in an international environment is a plus. 

  • Proficiency in French is highly desirable.

Travel Expectations

This role may be expected to travel internationally up to 20% of the time with expenses funded/reimbursed by OpenMRS Inc., and supported by the OpenMRS Inc. Operations team.

Compensation

Rates commensurate with experience and location the person is based. Location is determined by the country where the person is residing at the start of the contract.
